Aston Youth F&N v Old Wulfrunians

Twenty Two Seconds Away from Victory

With injuries and unavailabilities mounting up prior to selection, it was clear by Tuesday that the fourth XI would have only nine fit players from the previous game.  It was a case of naming twelve players and hoping that by some sort of miracle, the injured players would be fit.

Unfortunately by Friday this wasn't the case and the fourth XI were left with nine fit players and couple of injured players who came to make up the numbers, and with Andy Carey drafting in two Grammar School lads who hadn't played for, while we actually had fourteen players.

So for the second time this season the fourth XI set off to Hill Top Golf Course and hoped that the game would be on this time, or that the opposition would turn up after they failed to turn up the previous week against Maple Leaf Rovers.

It was clear that upon arrival the game would be on, so after player manager Chris Nicholls named his side three times before he got it right, the fourth XI headed out to warm up on the worst pitch so far this season.

From the off it was clear that Wulfs were up for this game as they laid siege to Aston's goal for forty-five minutes with nothing to show for it.

Straight from the off the fourth XI laid siege once again at Aston's goal.  It didn't take long before Gaz Prosser Scored his first and second goal of the afternoon to take his tally to ten so far this season.

Looking quite good for the two goal lead, the fourth XI added a third, Jacob Leadham scoring his first of the season, about f**king time.

At this point the game looked beyond Aston as the fourth XI carried on probing for more goals and were so unlucky not to make it four, five, six or even seven.

With fifteen minutes to go Aston nicked a goal and with it some self belief as the game sprung into life and Wulfs failed to shut up shop.  Aston nicked another, and to top it off equalised with twenty seconds remaining.

This was a good point for Aston who were second coming into today's game and most would say it was a good point for us.  I disagree; it was more like two points lost as we surrendered a three goal lead to a side who really didn't deserve a share of the spoils.

Ref watch: The ref was quality, the best so far this season.

Moan of the match:  I only thought Sol Campbell gave goals away for free.

Taxi of the match: Player Manager Chris Nicholls gets the nod this week.  Whilst confirming today's starting line after three attempts he finally got it right, despite sitting next to Ian 'Wrighty' Phillips, who he missed out completely from his line up twice!!!!  Sorry Wrighty, its been a bad week.  No vote of confidence from our beloved Chairman about the fourth XI's direction, a lack of players and far too many sleepless nights.  Thank god Danny's back next week.

******** Taxi For Nicholls ********

Final score: Aston Youth F&N 3  Old Wulfrunians 3.
