Selection issues during the week had left us shorn of Sean, minus Andy and with no Gary G, Luke S and Rob W the midfield was looking lightweight and the forward line empty. We filled the gap in midfield, literally, with super skipper Rovers and asked new boy Mike Forrester to have a go at playing centre forward and within five minutes there had been two goals, regular readers will be gobsmacked to hear that for the first time this season we scored them and in the right net!
Excellent play by Patrick set up Forrester for an easy tap in, which he had two attempts at and then Andy Jones chipped the keeper from the left edge of the box, again after good work by Patrick. It was all one way and another excellent move saw Harris whip in a delightful cross from the right which somehow Patrick put over the bar with his head when it just needed to hit the target to put the game to bed. The remainder of the first half saw Village begin to feature but with no chances and two other good one on one opportunities were missed to really put the game beyond doubt.
The second half saw a more determined opposition begin to bite more in midfield and have more of the game without really creating any clear opportunities and knocks and strains to Edwards, Jones and Preston meant we lost some momentum. The only viable sub was Paul who came on for the unwell Hart and the rest of the lads then just dug in and got on with it knowing that any injury would force the now expectant Morgan onto the field of play.
Although the shape of the game had now changed Wulfs soaked up the pressure easily, allowing no real shots on goal and used the pace of Forrester and Oliver well on the break to create and spurn five more one on ones in the second half, all created by tenacious tackling and excellent distribution from either Edwards or Patrick. The opposition finally force one back in the final ten due to a fortuitous deflection and a dubious challenge on the keeper but they never really exerted enough pressure to make a draw likely.
A good result and the no home win since September 17th finally off our back!
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 2 Village 1.
