Boosted by our hard earned point away at Silhill last week, the 1st XI were quietly confident of building on this with a win against Kynoch. Unfortunately we were dealt an early blow when we were informed that Jamie Perkins would be spending the afternoon on the toilet and not strolling around the midfield. The management made the bold decision to go with an attacking 3-4-3 formation to help us get some much needed points.
It took us a while to get going as we struggled with the conditions and the change of formation but soon we were in full flow with the attacking three of Simon Stewart, Brian Flavell and Kulveer Jeer creating numerous good chances. Brian could easily have scored a first half brace if it had not been the fact that his left leg is definitely for standing on and not shooting. We were also causing them trouble from set pieces as they were finding it hard to deal with our goal laden defenders. At the other end of the pitch The Flying Poppadom Darren Sangha was comfortably dealing with any chances that Kynoch had.
The highlight of the first half though was when our box to box midfield dynamo Jim Lawton got bored with the football and began to get himself prepared for Wrestlemania 22. From nowhere Kynoch's number 14 decided to creep up on Jim and have the audacity to tackle him whilst in full flow. As you can imagine he was not too pleased about this and responded by firstly grabbing the Kynoch player in the 'Million Dollar Dream' headlock and then producing a body slam into the floor. There were a couple of moments passed as they rolled around the ground together until Jim forced his opposite number to submit thanks to the old favourite that is the knee in the stomach!! And we got the free kick as well.
We reached the half-time whistle with the scores even at 0-0. Changes had to be made though as Brian complained of having a poorly tummy and feeling sick so he had to be replaced by Ben 'Viduka' Kimpton. There is absolutely no truth in the rumour though that Brian was merely saving himself for a match winning performance in the Birmingham Junior Cup semi final just 24 hours later for Orton Vale!!
Luckily for us the change was a good one as within ten minutes of the re-start Kulveer floated over an inviting corner to be met by the flying Ben Kimpton who made no mistake in heading the ball into the net. The job was now on for us to defend and earn 3 valuable points. Our own Hulk Hogan had to be replaced shortly after the goal as he had to go to the Wacky Warehouse for a party. We kept on creating good chances to score with Ben and Stewie both going close to extending the lead. At the back Kynoch came at us pushing 3 up front but we held firm thanks to some good goalkeeping from Darren and a goal line clearance from Matt Williams. The last ten minutes was like the Alamo but we held firm to claim our second home win of the season.
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 1 Kynoch 0.
